I would like to take a few moments today to thank someone I have never and likely will never meet, though I admire their generosity and also their insight into what truly matters.
Yesterday, officials announced a transformational $1.25 million gift from Kingston philanthropist Stephen Sorensen to the Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
The targeted investment will fund a new suite of advanced diagnostic imaging and critical-care equipment for the Emergency Department at Kingston General Hospital and the Urgent Care Centre at Hotel Dieu Hospital.
His reasoning was rock solid. In his words, “It was about listening to the healthcare professionals who are there when patients need help the most. If we can help our clinicians make faster decisions, and improve patient outcomes within months rather than years, then we’ve made a real difference…he then called it ‘Targeted Clinician-Based Philanthropy’ “
On behalf of the countless families across the Quinte Region who will benefit from your generosity, let me say thank you Mr. Sorensen, or should I say Stephen.
That donations won’t only save lives in the “Limestone City”. Hundreds if not thousands of people from the Quinte Region regularly use the services at Kingston Hospitals. They received cancer care there, went for supplemental tests, received critical care in emergencies after stopping at BGH, and consulted with specialists tied to research at Queen’s University.
Kingston Hospitals are vital resources available to local patients when things look the most dire. This donation can turn one of the worst days in a person’s life into the first step in a journey of healing and recovery. That makes it not only generous and inspiring, but truly priceless.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
