Tens of thousands of customers are in the dark across many southern areas of Ontario and Quebec after high winds and a severe thunderstorm rolled through the region Wednesday evening and brought down numerous tree limbs and power lines.
The website for the Ontario utility Hydro One showed before midnight the number of homes and businesses without power at 170,000, but that number has since been reduced to 143,000 as of 5 a.m.
Hydro-Quebec is reporting outages affecting about 8,000 homes and businesses.
Here in Quinte, some outages are still being reported by Hydro One, with the largest affecting more than 5,300 customers in the Marmora, Madoc, Deloro and Springbrook regions.
That outage, hydro officials say, is not expected to end until Thursday afternoon.
A little more than 900-plus homes and businesses are also in darkness in Plainfield and Corbyville.
Scattered outages are also noted across various pockets of the region.
City of Quinte West officials also announced the postponement of Canada Day fireworks until Thursday due to the storm.
The full outage map can be seen on Hydro One’s website.
