Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette has released a statement following the shooting on Sunday night at the site of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in east-end Belleville.
STATEMENT FROM MP CHRIS MALETTE –
I am shocked and appalled by the horrible act of violence that has rocked our community of Belleville and the Jewish congregation of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
On the eve of the holiest of Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur, gunfire tore through the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood where Jews have gathered in peace and prayer for decades. An officer has sustained gunshot wounds and is thankfully recovering and, for that, we offer our heartfelt thanks for his heroism and support to both him and his family.
While information is still being gathered by both Belleville Police and the province’s Special Investigations Unit, I have been in contact since last evening with both Prime Minister Carney’s office and the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, as well as my House of Commons colleague MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman, Mayor Neil Ellis and Belleville Police.
Again, we want to offer our heartfelt support and open arms in solidarity with the Jewish community in the Bay of Quinte and the members of the Sons of Jacob community.
Our office will be available for any and all updates on federal response to the shooting incident of Sunday evening.
