Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander has issued a public statement about the shooting outside a Belleville synagogue.
He says it is a place of worship for many people across the region, including some from Brighton.
His statement, posted to social media, is included below.
STATEMENT FROM BRIAN OSTRANDER –
Our thoughts are with the local Jewish community and first responders in Belleville following deeply concerning news this evening regarding an incident near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue on Yom Kippur—the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.
While this incident is in Belleville, the Sons of Jacob Synagogue serves as the spiritual home for Jewish families across our entire Quinte region, including right here in Brighton.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the police officers and emergency service personnel responding to this incident. No one should ever feel fear or intimidation when gathering at their place of worship.
Brighton stands in solidarity with the Jewish community across Quinte today. Hate, antisemitism, and violence have no place in our region or our country.
