It is a day of endings and beginnings, of transitions and finality, of joy, of hope but also of melancholy.
Of course, I am speaking of the last day of school.
When we were young (many years ago for me), it was a day we circled on the calendar with great anticipation.
Summer fun awaits with outdoor adventures and vacation trips and summer camps and fireworks with family and friends.
As parents, we have a new set of challenges and things to look forward to, but we must never forget the people who made the past nine months unforgettable for our kids.
Thanks to the teachers, the EA’s, the administrators, the clerical and support staff, the trustees for their oversight, the engineers and technicians for keeping the lights on, the bus drivers and crossing guards for getting them to and from school safely, and everyone else who made the system work.
But also, thanks for the caring.
Our youngest son Alex goes from elementary to high school in the fall, and I recently exactly how much everyone at his school has been pulling for him to succeed and be happy and it was both encouraging and touching.
So as we embrace summer adventures and look forward to new beginnings in the fall, let us also be thankful for everyone who not only educates for truly cares for our children. We owe you a debt that can never truly be repaid.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
