More information has been released about a fire involving hazardous materials that led to an evacuation earlier this week in Napanee.
The Greater Napanee Fire Department was first called to 248 Kimmetts Side Road at 10:30 am on June 23 (Tuesday) and remained on site for approximately six hours. During that time, firefighters implemented scene safety measures, established a secure perimeter, conducted initial containment monitoring, and evacuated nearby businesses and residences. The Fire Department also worked with the Spills Action Centre, consulted with CANUTEC (Canadian Transport Emergency Centre), and coordinated with external agencies, including the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Ministry of Labour.
The incident involved a gaseous release caused by the mixing of several industrial chemicals used in the recycling of precious metals. The cloud is believed to have been a nitric oxide mixture. The exact cause of the release remains under investigation.
Through the use of monitoring equipment, and in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, it was confirmed that the gaseous release had subsided and was contained within the building. This allowed for the safe reopening of roadways and the return of evacuated residents. All initial response actions were taken out of an abundance of caution.
The Fire Department worked closely with the Spills Action Centre and specialists from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks to ensure the area was safe for re-entry.
At this time, officials say the situation has been contained, and there is no risk to public safety. A specialized clean-up crew has attended the site to manage any necessary interior decontamination.
Approximately 15 individuals were accommodated at the Best & Bash Arena until they were cleared to return to their homes. All area businesses have resumed operations.
