Representatives of both Hastings and Prince Edward Counties are offering their support to those affected by the Belleville Sons of Jacob Synogogue shooting with statements.
Hastings County officials stated they are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred in Belleville on Sunday evening and the impact it has had on members of the community.
“Our thoughts are with the injured Belleville Police Service officer, the congregants of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue, their families, and everyone affected by this disturbing event,” the statement read in part.
“At times like these, we are reminded of the importance of standing together in support of one another. We extend our solidarity to Belleville’s Jewish community and to all
those feeling the effects of this tragedy.”
They added they are grateful for the swift response of first responders, including Belleville Police Service, our own Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Services, and all emergency personnel who worked to protect and care for those involved.
Meanwhile, PEC Mayor Steve Ferguson stated he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by news of the shooting.
“Our thoughts are with members of Belleville’s Jewish community during this deeply troubling time,” he stated.
“Our thoughts are also with Belleville police officer Const. Jeff Smith and his family during his recovery.”
Both statements emphasized that violence and acts that threaten the safety and security of any community have no place in the region and they are committed to fostering communities where all residents feel safe, respected, and free to gather, worship, and participate in community life without fear.
