Beyond the Headlines – sale of the Wellington Dukes

By Paul Martin May 6, 2026 | 11:15 AM

Changes are on the way for an organization that is as much a cornerstone of Prince Edward County as Shire Hall itself.

Officials with the team announced yesterday that the Wellington Dukes are inching closer toward being sold to a local buyer.

Owner Ken Clement, who started as a part-owner and fully took over the franchise in 2021, has entered into a Letter of Intent with a Bay of Quinte businessman for the purchase of the team. Full details are expected after league approval, possibly by the end of the month.

In a statement from the team, Clement said this step represents meaningful progress toward securing the long-term stability of the Dukes and maintaining the rich history of Junior A hockey in the community.

While changes are inevitable with a new owner on the way, I am relieved to hear that it sounds like this deal will ensure the Dukes remain in the County and moving the team has been ruled out.

While the Quinte Region has a rich history and ongoing relationship with a number of local clubs (hockey and otherwise), The Dukes are something special for Wellington and indeed all of Prince Edward County.

Among other things, they continue to hold the longest playoff streak in Canadian Junior Hockey League history at 37 straight seasons.

The roots in Wellington run deep for the Dukes, and they have grown into a sense of pride and community involvement that is a priceless bonus for the lucky person who has decided to sign on the dotted line for the team.
