Beyond the Headlines – former Trenton Mayor Neil Robertson

By Paul Martin Apr 30, 2026 | 9:42 AM

Quinte West is taking time to pause and remember one of the most foundational figures in the history of Trenton.

Tributes began pouring in yesterday after news began circulating about the death of Neil Robertson.

The former Mayor of Trenton from 1982 to 1997 (just before amalgamation in what we now call Quinte West) passed away at the age of 91.

His years leading Council paved the way came at a critical juncture in the areas history and helped pave the way for amalgamation in 1998.

Mayor Jim Harrison called Robertson a sincere, honest, and devoted politician who served with respect and dignity for all.

Did he ever serve, and not just on Council!

He was previously elected to the local school board and also was actively involved in the Trenton Kiwanis Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110, Trenton Racquet Club, Curling Club, Squash Club, Citizens Band, Hospital Board, Quinte Agricultural Society, Trenton Community Gardens, and was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus in Trenton and Peterborough.

His love for life for Trenton itself were legendary, and they are how I shall remember one of the first municipal leaders to sit down with me for an interview with a smile on his face and warm words for everyone he met.

He shall be greatly missed.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
