Beyond the Headlines – Canada on the world stage

I would like to compliment Prime Minister Mark Carney who walks the walk as he talks the talk, often while overseas.

He is racking up an impressive list of wins in the trade area, culminating with an announcement yesterday involving one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Carney agreed to resume discussions on a bilateral free trade deal, the latest sign of warming relations between the two countries, with a goal of nearly doubling trade to $50 billion a year by 2030.

Carney also accepted Modi’s invitation to visit India early next year.

It’s important to note the progress in this area because it was anything but guaranteed, as relations were recently very frosty after former-pm Justin Trudeau and other officials said there was evidence the Indian government orchestrated the killing of a Sikh activist in the Vancouver region back in 2023.

In this case, however, the new boss is clearly NOT the same as the old boss, and the catch-phrase of selling Canada to the world is actually happening.

Last week, we also saw a key meeting as Swedish Royalty arrived in Canada, along with the promise of future investment and the possibility of a strategic partnership for Saab to assemble Gripen fighter jets in Canada.

The simple truth is you can’t lead if you aren’t at the table, and as the U.S. boycotted the G-20 summit, the world seems to be looking to Canada for leadership, investment and opportunity.
