A cornerstone of local life-saving and property protection efforts for over 30 years will be honoured at a tasty annual event next month in Picton.
The Picton Fair will be the backdrop for the Bake Off Challenge on Saturday, September 6th at the Prince Edward Curling Club, to raise money for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
This year’s event holds special meaning as it will honour the legacy of Belleville Deputy Fire Chief Jim Young, who passed away last April after a career that included more than 30 years with the Prince Edward County Fire Department.
Everyone knows how Jim supported and protected the community, but some may not know that Jim was the inaugural winner of the Bake Off in 2007, earning top marks with his unforgettable apple pie. As a result, they are having a one-year-only commemorative Apple Pie competition in Jim’s memory.
I often speak of the debt we owe our first responders, but we rarely get the chance to honour them as we should and this presents the perfect opportunity to recognize and celebrate a true community hero while also showing support for those on the front lines today.
Susie Harrington, President of the Picton Fair Board said it best when she said that Jim brought warmth, humour, and serious baking abilities to the table, and he’d be proud to see the community come together in such a sweet way.”
The only thing warmer and more inviting than a Jim Young apple pie was the smile of the man standing behind it, which if he were still here, this event would surely inspire.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
