Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings hosted its first Women Build Day since 2018 on September 15 at its Tyendinaga build site.
Eleven women volunteered their time and raised $3,300 for the project. In just eight hours they framed more than 12 exterior walls for a future home for three local Indigenous families.
The day opened with remarks from Chief Maracle, who spoke about the history of the land and the importance of caring for it, setting a meaningful tone for the work ahead.
The volunteers were led by Tammy Watson, founder of Canadian Handywoman, and Deb Wilson, Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Northumberland.
Watson, who specializes in teaching women to use tools safely, guided participants through the equipment on site, while Wilson drew on years of experience to oversee safety gear, site rules and potential hazards.
Working together, the team lifted walls, drilled anchor holes, nailed in supports and screwed the walls together, with every participant gaining hands on experience with the tools.
The build was made possible with help from local partners, including Starbucks, Flossie’s Sandwich Parlor, C&B Cresting and the Canadian Handywoman.
Habitat for Humanity PEH is planning to host another Women Build Day.
