This past weekend, a group of 64 Albert College students and nine staff members canvassed four neighbourhoods for Belleville Gleaners Full Plate food drive, in advance of Thanksgiving weekend.
The volunteers knocked on doors on Queen Street, Avondale, Applewood and Wright Crescent, and both the Leland Drive and Village Drive neighbourhoods.
They collected a wide variety of non-perishable items totaling 1,905 lbs of food and $260.
The donations will be added to the over 10,000 pounds Gleaners collected at their Full Plate event on October 1 at local grocery stores.
Whitney Woloshyn, Albert College’s active citizenship coordinator, was encouraged by the strong response from students. “This was the largest group of Albert College students in many years,” she explains. “Not only are they motivated to volunteer in their community, but they also shared with me that food insecurity is an issue that truly matters to them. I was truly impressed with their enthusiasm for this important initiative.”
