Beyond the Headlines – new Elgin Parkette playground

By Hailey MacDonald Oct 8, 2025 | 12:23 PM

Friday will be a special day in the west side of Belleville, one that one former Mayor would have loved to see.

A special grand opening celebration is being held for the new Elgin Parkette playground.

The playground will be at the southwest corner of Sidney Street and Moira Street West, with parking available off Elgin Street. The event on Friday is from 1 to 3 pm, with a number of free activities and giveaways including face painting, balloon creations and free food truck tickets for the first 100 patrons (courtesy of Park N Play Design).

When I used to sit on the accessibility committee for the city, I was always thrilled to see new playgrounds and additions to current ones on the agenda.

There is no better investment for the city than these kinds of recreational spaces.

They are free, encourage exercise and group play, and serve as gathering points for both social and community events of all sizes.

Before she passed away in 2022, I remember talking to former Mayor Robin Jeffrey about her passion for city parks and playgrounds and how many Mayors after her have supported these important landmarks across the city.

A drive she began back in the 70’s continues to grow and take root in new corners of the city every single year, so thanks to everyone involved in the Elgin Parkette playground for continuing her vision, and putting smiles on the faces of hundreds of children and parents in Belleville alike.

I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
