The strength of any organization is the people who make it work.
As I attended yesterday’s ceremony to mark the 190th anniversary of the Belleville Police Service, I was struck by the amazing history behind it, the dedication and bravery of all who have worn the badge and uniform, and it’s place as a cornerstone of the city itself.
While seeing old friends and new ones from former Chiefs to civilian employees, I found myself thinking of an officer I have never met, but to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude.
I send these words of thanks out to Constable Erik Fernandez.
My father-in-law John passed away last week suddenly after a long period of declining mental and physical health. There was nothing suspicious about his death, but (of course) it’s still something that requires proper notification and police attention.
As my wife Sarah and our family dealt with this tragedy, we were struck by the professionalism, responsiveness and care shown by Constable Fernandez as he attended the scene and then helped us deal with some basic questions in the aftermath of John’s passing.
It was greatly appreciated.
As we heard from the excellent leadership team and VIP’s like former Chief Tanner at yesterday’s ceremony, I found myself thinking of the hundreds of officers like Constable Fernandez and the protection and care they have provided us in Belleville for almost two centuries.
Those who serve and protect also form strong connections to the community and its citizens, offering support that is just as important as any investigation or arrest.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
