Quinte West is following in the footsteps of its neighbours in Belleville and reducing development charges to better clear the way for new housing.
Councillors in the municipality discussed and approved a motion to sign an agreement in principle to lower development charges by 30-per cent or more during Wednesday’s meeting of council.
The development charges reduction program offers funding to municipalities for infrastructure projects tied to new development in exchange for reducing development charges for builders.
To qualify for funding, municipalities are required to reduce development charges by 30 to 50 per cent or more over three years.
Quinte West Staff are preparing to make an application to the DCRP for five projects.
Under the eligibility requirements for the DCRP, the City of Quinte West would be eligible for up to 90-per cent of funding for eligible project costs.
