Some very important people in the life-saving business now have more room to help people with the fight of their lives in Belleville.
A special event was held yesterday at Belleville General Hospital to celebrate the expansion of the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic.
The work included repurposing existing space adjacent to the clinic to provide additional room for patients and families and strengthens Quinte Health’s ability to meet the growing demand for cancer care in the region.
To put in in perspective, systemic therapy visits such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy have increased by 23 per cent at the clinic since 2019/20, while total visits to the Cancer Clinic have grown by 36 per cent over the same period.
According to Ontario Health, nearly one in two Ontarians are expected to develop cancer during their lifetime, and more than 260 people in the province are diagnosed with cancer every day.
Having better diagnosis and therapy treatments available closer to home make a huge difference, and while the care delivered in Kingston (in partnership with research and other support from Queen’s University) is amazing, travel takes its toll on people already fighting for their lives.
We should all be very thankful that we can get this level of care right here in Belleville, and that everyone involved in this project was able to get it done and provide these amazing enhancements.
Cancer is a battle that touches everyone’s life either individually or through someone we love. It’s good to know that at Belleville General Hospital, more and more people will get the support they need when it matters the most.
