Hawks score 10th straight win over rival Cougars

By Brock Ormond Feb 3, 2025 | 10:38 PM

For the second time this season, the Trenton Golden Hawks have racked up 10 straight victories.

The Hawks warded off a late Cobourg Cougars attack to hang on for a 4-3 victory on Monday night.

Following a goalless first period, Trenton strung together three markers in four-and-a-half minutes early in the second, with Kyloe Ellis starting the scoring off on a two-on-one with Jamie Darlison.

Cooper Matthews slammed in his 25th of the season at the 5:45 mark, then Candon O’Neill increased the lead less than two minutes later on a feed from Taeo Artichuk, marking his 50th assist of the season.

Cobourg got two back to close the gap before the end of the stanza off Nico Laforge’s stick, but a Devin Mauro shorthanded tally a little more than two minutes into the third put the Hawks ahead to stay.

Zack Carrier scored in the late stages to cut the Trenton lead back to one, but it wasn’t enough and the visitors held on.

Ellis, Isaiah Shantz, Nathan Taylor, Corbin Roach and Aaron Brown all notched helpers as well, with Brady Spry making 30 saves in Trenton’s 39th win of the season.

The Hawks return home looking to keep the heat on against the Markham Royals at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
