Prince Edward County / X.
Prince Edward County has launched a survey this summer about how the Municipal Accomodation Tax money should be spent.
The local MAT tax, added on to bills for short-term rentals, hotels, and bed and breakfasts etc., started in 2021. The county has an online survey up until August 14th at 4 p.m., about the revenue.
County staff were asked last year to understand how the community feels about where the municipal portion should go.
Background from PEC staff:
The Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) is a tax on short‑term accommodations . It is paid by visitors, not residents. Under provincial rules, MAT revenue is collected by accommodation providers and remitted to the municipality, where it is divided 50/50:
- 50% goes to eligible tourism organizations (Visit the County and StayPEC Accommodation Association) for tourism marketing and development
- 50% remains with the municipality to support local services, projects, or infrastructure
After administrative costs and the 50/50 revenue split, the municipal portion of MAT funding is roughly $600,000 per year, though the amount fluctuates depending on visitor levels each year.
