UPDATE – SIU appealing for witnesses following interaction between police and man at BGH

By Hailey MacDonald Sep 4, 2025 | 3:38 PM

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate an interaction that occurred on August 29, 2025 in the Belleville General Hospital emergency room between police and a 35-year-old man who appeared to be agitated.

Based on preliminary information, the SIU reported that the man had been arrested. In fact, the man was not arrested – he was restrained and then seen at hospital. The man has since been released from hospital.

An earlier report said that the man’s family reported to police that the man had suffered serious injuries, and this information was then shared with the SIU.

Three investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
