Belleville Terry Fox run raises over $58,000

It was another record breaking fundraising day for the Terry Fox Run in Belleville.

Our community’s version of the 45th annual Terry Fox Run kicked off at Zwicks Park in Belleville this morning.

The event, which raises money for cancer research, raised $56,000 in Belleville last year, and over the years, has raised close to $1.1 million.

This year, the event was able to raise an incredible $58,713.

Fox, who lost his leg to cancer at the age of 18, began his Marathon of Hope in April of 1980, in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

His relentless and often agonizing cross-country quest to reach the west coast would end in Thunder Bay in September of that year, though his dream of raising money for cancer research was only beginning.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $950 million and funded over 1,300 innovative cancer research projects.

As of 10am this morning, Belleville’s Terry Fox Run had surpassed $50,000.

The organization would like to thank the volunteers, fundraisers, and community supporters for continuing to make a difference in Canadian cancer research.
