The Trenton Golden Hawks were burned by five unanswered goals against in a 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Jr. Sabres on Friday night.
The American border-hoppers wrecked the Hawks good start by taking advantage of ill-timed penalties by the home side, scoring four times on the powerplay to roll away to victory.
Liam Fisher struck early for the Hawks, putting home his fourth of the year from Kaiden Harmon and Beckett Ewart just under two minutes into the night.
Two minutes later, Kale Mace fired one short-side on Buffalo goalie Logan Vitez to increase the lead with assistance from Ethan Brassard and Nathan McHattie.
From the second period onward, it was largely all Buffalo, with Jake Brown, Davin Krakowiak (with two) and Watson Prier all scoring in the middle frame, with three of the four coming on a man advantage.
Under five minutes into the third, Carson Joy bagged Buffalo’s fourth powerplay marker behind Hayden Jeffery to further enlarge the gap.
Brassard got one back for Trenton on a powerplay of its own from Fisher and Harmon in the later stages, but it just wasn’t quite enough to trigger a comeback, as the Hawks suffered their third straight defeat.
Final shots favoured the Hawks by a hair, 40-39.
Trenton returns to home ice versus another Western Conference opponent, the Georgetown Raiders next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
