BLADES 5 HAWKS 2
It was a tough OJHL Governor’s Showcase for the Trenton Golden Hawks.
A day after getting shelled by the Collingwood Blues, the Hawks dropped a 5-2 decision to the Oakville Blades on Tuesday afternoon in Niagara Falls.
Trenton fell behind 1-0 after the first and 3-0 after two before getting on the board early in the third.
Kale Mace scored off a rush set up by Ethan Brassard and Hunter Spicher just under two minutes into the period to get the Hawks in flight, the Oshawa, Ont. native’s seventh of the year.
Less than four minutes later, Kaiden Harmon evaded an Oakville check before hitting Ryan Chamberlain, who whipped a shot past Vaughn Barr in the Blades crease for his fourth of the season.
The comeback hopes were dashed by Oakville’s undisputed player of the game, Marcus Chiella, who completed a hat trick with a powerplay goal, before Lincoln Cumming tacked on extra insurance in the late stages for the Blades victory.
Nolan Nicoll kicked out 22 of 26 shots in the loss.
The Hawks will embark on a return trip home to meet the Buffalo Jr. Sabres for the one and only time this season at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
DUKES 2 FLYERS 1 (SO)
Dryden Riley continues to be the ‘King of the Throne’ between the posts for the Wellington Dukes.
The Trenton resident flummoxed and flustered a strong Leamington Flyers outfit with 48 saves on Tuesday at the Showcase in a 2-1 shading.
Riley made 14 stops in the first, 16 in the second and 13 in the third, adding five more in overtime for good measure to keep Wellington in the game.
Kasen Beitz popped his fourth of the season, his fourth game in a row with a goal on a breakaway at 7:25 of the first, before Chase Pettipiece gave Riley his only regulation blemish halfway through the second frame on a powerplay.
Leamington’s Eric Muxlow and Wellington’s Zach Mascard both scored in the shootout before 16-year-old Quinte Red Devils graduate Austin Ottenhof buried the winner in the fifth round on Flyers goalie Tomas Kniazew.
A Riley stop off Josh Cleary stamped a huge win for the Dukes, who improve to 7-2-1-1 on the season with 16 points and keep pace near the top of the East Conference.
Wellington now heads into a matchup with the Burlington Cougars at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
