In great moments, unlikely heroes step up and help get the job done.
It was a weekend for epic sports moments as the Knicks won the NBA title on Saturday and the Hurricanes went into Las Vegas and captured the Stanley cup for Carolina last night with a 3-zip win in game six.
A familiar name to fans of the Canes (and no one else around the league) was front and centre for the big moment, as Brandon Bussi started in net and posted a shutout to seal the deal last night.
Bussi was a rookie in the NHL this year at age 27 after being claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers back on October 5th.
He was then placed behind veteran goalie Frederick Andersen, who led Carolina through a dominant run in the first three rounds before Bussi over for Steady Freddie in game three and never looked back.
This 6’4″ giant of a man who went undrafted and was once under contract with the Boston Bruins before Florida let him go to Carolina, is now a Stanley Cup champion.
While he sat on the bench behind “Steady Freddie” he said nothing. No complaints, no drama, no selfish rants on social media. He supported the team and was ready to step in when needed.
Professional. Hard-working. Legit. Just like the Hurricanes, who have a banner to hang, a parade to plan, and two amazing goalies on the roster with tons of talent and zero attitude.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
