Brighton, Ontario and Brighton, New York are coming together for a potential twinning relationship.
Brighton council signed off on the twinning agreement for the two communities at its meeting on Monday.
Brighton, New York is in Monroe County, in the Rochester area.
During the early days of recently imposed tariffs impacting cross-border relations, Mayor Brian Ostrander stated he undertook an initiative to strengthen international municipal relationships by reaching out to communities sharing the name “Brighton.”
The intent, he explained, was to foster goodwill, collaboration, and cultural exchange despite broader economic pressures.
Following the initial outreach, informal discussions began between Ostrander and the Brighton, NY Town Supervisor, which the mayor said demonstrated a shared interest in strengthening ties between the two communities.
Following council’s approval, the next step would be to begin drafting a formal twinning charter, similar to the agreement previously executed with Anisy, France.
