By Paul Martin May 26, 2026 | 5:17 AM

The province’s Special Investigations Units is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 28-year-old man in OPP custody in Cobourg.

The following details were released by the SIU on Monday.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On the evening of May 24, 2026, OPP officers attended an address in Cramahe Township to do a welfare check on a man at the request of a family member. Once officers learned that the man was wanted on a fail to comply warrant, he was arrested. Due to facial injuries the officers observed the man to have, EMS was contacted.
  • The man was transported to hospital. He was medically cleared and released into police custody.
  • The man was transported to the OPP Northumberland Detachment and lodged in a cell.
  • The following morning, the man went into medical distress.
  • Paramedics transported the man to hospital. He was pronounced deceased.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
Northumberland OPP also issued a few details on the incident on Monday night, but can’t comment further since it’s now being investigated by the SIU.
The initial statement from the OPP is included below.
