The province’s Special Investigations Units is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 28-year-old man in OPP custody in Cobourg.
- On the evening of May 24, 2026, OPP officers attended an address in Cramahe Township to do a welfare check on a man at the request of a family member. Once officers learned that the man was wanted on a fail to comply warrant, he was arrested. Due to facial injuries the officers observed the man to have, EMS was contacted.
- The man was transported to hospital. He was medically cleared and released into police custody.
- The man was transported to the OPP Northumberland Detachment and lodged in a cell.
- The following morning, the man went into medical distress.
- Paramedics transported the man to hospital. He was pronounced deceased.
OPP release – The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following an arrest in Cramahe Township.
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, shortly before 7:00 p.m., officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an incident in Cramahe Township and arrested an individual, who was subsequently transported to the Northumberland Detachment.
While in custody, the individual went into medical distress and was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.
The OPP has notified the SIU, which has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide further information. Any media inquiries should be directed to siu.media@ontario.ca.
