Quinte West OPP wants to warn the public regarding a incident of a phishing fraud in the area.
Police say a complaint was filed on Wednesday where a person paid $120 after receiving a text message warning of a driver’s licence suspension if the fine wasn’t paid immediately.
The link provided for payment resembled the Service Ontario website.
In a phishing scam, victims are tricked into clicking the link and entering banking information, such as credit cards, for payment.
This leaves banking information unprotected and possibly subject to further loss of funds. Often financial institutions will not reimburse clients for such transactions.
Police say awareness is key to protecting yourself and preventing others from fraud.
You’re urged to be skeptical of unexpected requests and verify any communication with trusted sources and never share personal or financial information with anyone you don’t know.
If you suspect fraud, or have been affected, report it to your local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
