Plans have been pitched to move ahead with more housing opportunities at the former Bakelite Thermosets property in Belleville.
On Monday, Belleville’s Planning Advisory Committee reviewed a staff proposal to adjust the zoning by-law for the 37-hectare property on Dundas Street East, near Farley Avenue.
The committee approved the recommendation that would clear the path for up to 579 residential-units on the site. The plan includes allowing townhouses, single-detached, and mid-rise dwellings.
The report also pitched plans to extend the Shirley Langer Recreational Trail.
Greg Pinchin, the City’s Manager of Approvals, reassured the committee, including Belleville Councillor Paul Carr who raised the question, around the environmental aspect.
The site has contamination dating back to the 1940s.
Pinchin added that the plans as they stand to move ahead, remains contingent on making sure that the area for the trail extension is cleaned up to municipal and provincial standards.
Keeping that in mind, the committee approved the overall staff recommendations. The final decision will rest with Belleville Council at a future meeting.
The first meeting for the new Belleville Council is scheduled for Monday, November 16th.
