A major investment in breast cancer care is becoming a reality at Belleville General Hospital (BGH), thanks in part to an outstanding $75,000 donation from Elexicon Energy’s 2026 Charity Golf Tournament.
The gift helped Belleville General Hospital Foundation (BGHF) reach its $800,000 fundraising goal for a new 3D mammography system, bringing advanced breast cancer screening technology closer to home for thousands of women across the Quinte region.
“At Elexicon Energy, we believe our responsibility to the communities we serve extends beyond delivering reliable electricity. It also means investing in the health, well-being and long-term strength of those communities,” said Melanie Walls, Manager, Corporate Giving and Events, Elexicon Energy. “Through our Charity Golf Tournament, we are proud to support projects that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. We are honoured that our $75,000 contribution helped the Belleville General Hospital Foundation reach its fundraising goal. Knowing this investment will help bring advanced breast cancer screening technology to the region and will positively impact thousands of women, makes this partnership especially meaningful.”
The new system, which is currently being installed at BGH, will replace aging equipment with state-of-the-art 3D tomosynthesis technology. 3D mammography creates detailed, layered images of breast tissue, helping radiologists detect cancers earlier, particularly in women with dense breast tissue. The technology can also reduce unnecessary follow-up imaging and biopsies, providing patients with clearer answers and greater peace of mind.
“Elexicon Energy’s generosity helped us cross the finish line on this critical project,” said Erin Hewitson, Major Gifts Officer, Belleville General Hospital Foundation. “Access to this advanced screening technology can make a life-changing difference. Earlier detection means more treatment options, improved outcomes and less uncertainty for patients and their families. Their generosity will be felt for years to come.”
The $75,000 donation was made possible through Elexicon Energy’s annual Charity Golf Tournament, which celebrated a record-breaking year in 2026, raising $435,000 for six healthcare organizations across the communities it serves. Since its inception, the tournament has now raised a remarkable $1.5 million in support of local organizations.
The investment comes at a critical time. Belleville General Hospital serves a regional population of more than 160,000 people, and with Ontario expanding eligibility for breast cancer screening to women aged 40 and older, demand for mammography services is expected to grow. Approximately 4,300 scans are performed at BGH each year.
