Slowly, but surely, businesses in Picton are returning to regular operations following a large power outage that caused severe damage.
Late last week, several locations, including Community Care for Seniors on King Street and, Coaches Pub, Magpie Clothing and the County Club and Spa in the downtown, suffered a catastrophic surge after a transformer reportedly malfunctioned during work by a Hydro One crew.
During a scheduled outage Friday morning, workers replaced a pole and transformer connected to four buildings off Market Lane, installing 600 volts in place of a much smaller transformer.
During this work, Hydro One officials stated the transformer had a higher voltage than required and when it was installed, it sent a high voltage current into every attached building before the mistake was discovered, leading to major impacts on lighting, electrical wiring and equipment.
Services at the businesses are slowly returning to normal, with technicians working to get computers and other technology back on.
Community Care for Seniors stated on its social media that hydro was turned back on Tuesday afternoon, but there is still no heat in the building.
Also, the telephone system, some exit lights, automatic doors and electric/electronic devices are still in need of repair or replacement.
Staff members have been working remotely this week while the repair and restoration work continues.
Meanwhile, officials with Coaches Pub stated it has reopened this week for service following a few days of closure.
Customers who experienced damage are encouraged to submit a claim at Hydro One Damage Claim Form, and Hydro officials will review all claims as quickly as possible and work directly with customers throughout the process.
They apologized for the disruption and stated they will review how this occurred and will take the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening again.
