The City of Belleville was one of many municipalities and communities that took time to reflect on Indigenous history Wednesday.
Its National Day of Truth and Reconciliation ceremony down at Market Square featured guests Jonathon Maracle, Sheri Clarke and Fire Keeper Greg Loft, with Mayor Neil Ellis just one of a few dignitaries on hand to recognize the day.
Sept. 30 is a reminder of the importance of honouring the children who never came home, survivors of residential schools, their families and communities who continue to live with the lasting impacts of the residential school system.
City officials stated this day was a great opportunity to listen, learn and reaffirm responsibility to take meaningful action on the path toward reconciliation.
“We are fortunate to be neighbours with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and grateful for the opportunities to learn from their culture, traditions, stories and teachings,” a post on social media read.
