The suds will be flowing at one of Downtown Belleville’s most historic landmarks as Memorial Canteen & Beer Garden celebrates its Grand Opening inside Memorial Marketplace at 15 Market Street.
Owners Paul “Spike” Lees, Hillary Murphy and Ian Wilson were joined by Mayor Neil Ellis and Councillor Garnet Thompson on behalf of the City of Belleville, Danielle Letersky on behalf of MPP Tyler Allsopp, Kevin Clarke on behalf of MP Chris Malette, Elisha Maguire Manager of Economic Development for the City of Belleville, Jill Raycroft on behalf of the Belleville Chamber of Commerce and Danielle Furtado Executive Director of the DBIA, for the recent ribbon cutting to welcome the new business to the downtown core.
Located in the former Memorial Arena, Memorial Canteen & Beer Garden brings a new food and beverage experience to the growing Memorial Marketplace while embracing the history and character of the building it calls home.
The Memorial Arena has been part of Belleville’s story for nearly a century. Built in 1929 and originally known as the Hume Arena, the building was purchased by the City of Belleville in 1946 and renamed the Memorial Arena in 1947 in dedication to those who died in the war. Over the decades, it became an important gathering place for the community and played a significant role in Belleville’s sporting history.
“Memorial Marketplace is such a unique part of Downtown Belleville because it brings together our city’s history and its future,” stated Danielle Furtado, Executive Director of the Downtown Belleville BIA. “Seeing new businesses like Memorial Canteen & Beer Garden bring new energy into a building that means so much to this community is incredibly exciting. It gives people another reason to come downtown, gather together and experience this historic space in a completely new way.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to come down and celebrate one of Downtown Belleville’s newest businesses while experiencing the next chapter of one of the city’s most storied spaces. Memorial Canteen and Beer Garden is located at 6-15 Market St in Memorial Marketplace and will be open Sunday to Thursday from 12:00pm – 8:00pm and Friday to Saturday 12:00pm – 9:00pm.
