The Belleville Sikhs are joining in offering support to the city’s Jewish community following Sunday’s shooting.
A joint statement from Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Belleville and the Ontario Sikhs and Gurudwara Council, issued with members of the Sikh community was released, with both groups ‘unequivocally’ condemning the horrific act of violence that took place outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville during Yom Kippur.
“Places of worship are sacred spaces meant for peace, reflection, and community. No Canadian should ever feel fear, intimidation, or the threat of violence while gathering to pray,” the statement read in part.”
“We stand in absolute solidarity with the congregation of the Sons of Jacob Synagogue and the entire Jewish community across Canada.”
Both groups expressed deep gratitude and respect for Jeff Smith, the Belleville police officer who put his life on the line to prevent an even greater tragedy.
