One of the most beloved players in Toronto sports history returned for a special day-long hug this week.
Kyle Lowry signed a special one-day contract so he could retire as a Raptor, speaking to the media about it on Tuesday.
Raptors general manager and executive vice president Bobby Webster called Lowry “the greatest Raptor of all time,” saying he played with unparalleled grit and determination.
Lowry was a fixture of the Toronto Raptors as point guard from 2012 to 2021, and a key piece of the team that brought the NBA championship to Toronto in that magical spring of 2019.
Mayor Olivia Chow officially proclaimed Tuesday Kyle Lowry day in the city, a fitting tribute to a player that began the buildup of talent north of the border and continues to inspire players both current players and NBA hopefuls of the future.
The love the city and the nation feels for Lowry was obvious this week, with several tributes and special stories being shared.
His former teammate, the once and future Raptor All-star Kawhi Leonard was even at the press conference to just hang out and show his support.
It’s the kind of gesture that Lowry inspires and embodies. He always showed up, worked hard, and asked for nothing in return except the chance to be seen wearing a Raptors logo and giving his all to the team that he led.
Sometimes the greatest isn’t the best scorer or defender, it’s the person who inspires everyone around them, and that has Kyle Lowry written all over it.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
