Quinte West had a booming building month in May to try and make up ground from the year so far.
The municipality’s building department released its latest numbers on Thursday, noting 70 permits were issued at a value of $25.1 million last month.
While the number of permits was up from the 57 in May of last year, construction value was still more than halfway down from the $59.1 million from 2025.
Two large permits of $8.5 million and $7.4 million were issued for two new buildings to Staikos Homes Ltd. on Highway 2.
One of the buildings will hold a national grocery outlet and the other will be available for retail outlets. One section has already reportedly been leased to a national retail operation.
Almost half the permits were issued for residential builds.
The building numbers year-to-date still sit behind last year’s mark, with 198 permits and a construction value of $63 million, compared to 218 permits at a value of $81.5 million to this point in 2025.
