Stolen bike incident turns into assault in Cobourg

A 35-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a stolen bicycle incident escalated into an assault this past weekend in the far western part of our area.

Saturday, at approximately 10:50 a.m., police responded to the area of Division Street and Covert Street in Cobourg for a report of a stolen bicycle.

The complainant reported that the bicycle had been stolen earlier that morning at approximately 4:15 a.m.

The complainant located the stolen bicycle in the area of West Pebble Beach and Hibernia Street.

A confrontation between the complainant and the suspect reportedly escalated, during which the suspect threatened and assaulted the complainant with rocks and a pocketknife.

The complainant sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Officers eventually located the suspect in the downtown core, arresting and charging John-Saul Cooney, 35, with mischief and theft under $5,000, as well as possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, assault causing bodily Harm, two counts of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and three counts of failing to comply with an Undertaking.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and subsequently remanded into Cobourg Police custody.
