The hockey world is mourning the passing of a Trenton resident.
John Garrett, a longtime N-H-L broadcaster and former goaltender, has died at the age of 74.
Sportsnet said he died suddenly and a cause of death was not disclosed.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Cheech’ for his resemblance to actor Cheech Marin of ‘Cheech and Chong’ fame, Garrett spent more than two decades calling regional Vancouver Canucks games following a 14-year playing career and was working the first-round playoff series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Mammoth at the time of his death.
He suited up for the Canucks, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques, and had stints in the WHA, AHL, CHL and WHL in his career spanning from 1971-1985.
He moved into broadcasting after his playing career and worked on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada before joining Sportsnet.
