CAA SCO: Most parents concerned about child safety in school zones

By Hailey MacDonald Aug 27, 2025 | 10:20 AM

As the new school year approaches, CAA South Central Ontario is urging drivers to make responsible choices to protect children as they travel to, from and around school.

The regional arm of the roadside assistance and insurance organization has released new findings into concerns about congestion in school zones.

According to a recent survey, eight in 10 Ontario parents report traffic buildup during both drop-off (81 per cent) and pick-up (84 per cent) times, up from 2024.

A majority of parents (83 per cent) have also reported seeing unsafe driving behaviours in their child’s school zone – up three per cent from 2024.

As a result, 63 per cent of parents consider their child’s school zone very unsafe, a number that has climbed since 2023, when it was at 55 per cent.

Most parents are in favour of reducing the speed limit in school zones, with nearly half considering 30km/h as the most appropriate speed in these areas.

Many parents also believe that automated speed enforcement effectively deters speeding in school zones.
