A flag-raising event marked the beginning of an important month of awareness for families and supporters of those battling childhood cancer.
Tuesday morning outside Quinte West City Hall, city officials, councillors and a few of those affected by childhood cancer joined advocate Evelyn Wilson to raise the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month flag for the month of September.
The flag features a gold ribbon colour to represent the month, which is about sharing resources, and advocating for improved research, treatment, and support for children facing cancer.
Statistics indicate one in five children with cancer do not make it, including Wilson’s daughter Katie, who was lost to bone cancer at the age of 15.
Childhood cancer has historically been the lowest funded cancer, and most funds are raised from families affected.
