2025 began for the Quinte West Fire Department with a successful rescue of a dog that was trapped on the ice.
Crews from Frankford Station 7 responded to a call about a dog on the Trent River stuck on an ice floe in the area of Rosebush Road and McGuire Lane at 11:20 am on Wednesday.
After they arrived and assessed the situation, they drew up and executed a rescue plan which involved two Firefighters entering the water in a boat with a backup team on shore.
The two-year-old Golden Lab was successfully rescued.
Quinte West Fire Chief John Whalen says he is very proud of everyone involved but also wanted to Issue a note of caution.
He says local residents were talking about trying to retrieve the dog before Firefighters were dispatched, and he would not recommend members of the public go out in the open water or onto the ice without the proper equipment and training.
