The Belleville Senators took on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for Hockey Fights Cancer Weekend, earning a 3-1 victory.
Belleville started by holding off early pressure from the Phantoms before burying the game’s opening goal. After a close-range chance was turned aside by Aleksei Kolosov, Tyler Boucher picked up the puck and moved it over to Xavier Bourgault, who found Djibril Toure for his second goal of the season to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.
The second period saw no change to the scoresheet, but there were plenty of opportunities at both ends of the ice. The Senators were outshot 9-8 by the Phantoms in the frame, bringing the two-period shot total to 21-19 in favour of Lehigh Valley heading into the third.
Lehigh Valley tied the game early in the final frame. Just 18 seconds into the period, a rebound opportunity created by Danila Klimovich and Carl Grundstrom found Jacob Gaucher, who buried his fifth goal of the season to make it 1-1.
Just before the midway point, Belleville struck twice in a matter of minutes. The first came through a strong group effort, as Philippe Daoust and Oskar Pettersson won battles to create an opportunity for Xavier Bourgault, who wrapped the puck around and in to put Belleville ahead 2-1.
Not long after, Luke Ellinas stripped the puck off a turnover in the neutral zone before finding the back of the net for his first AHL goal, beating Kolosov five-hole to give the Senators a 3-1 cushion.
The Phantoms pushed back in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, as Jackson Parsons turned aside 34 of 35 shots to secure the 3-1 victory.
This marked the final meeting of the season between the two sides. The Senators finished the season series with a 1-1-0-0 record against the Phantoms, bringing their all-time record to 8-9-1-0.
The Senators get right back at it tomorrow as the Providence Bruins (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins) visit CIBC Place for some Saturday night hockey. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. as Hockey Fights Cancer Weekend continues.
