Members of the Prince Edward County OPP are reminding local residents to be mindful of their safety and take precatuions while on the water.
This comes after OPP members responded to a marine incident on East Lake after a canoe capsized around 12:45 p.m. Saturday, with two occupants entering the water.
With assistance from Prince Edward Fire and Rescue, and paramedics, both occupants were safely removed from the water.
Police say both were wearing life jackets when their canoe capsized, helping keep them afloat until they could be rescued.
With water temperatures continuing to drop this time of year, the risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia increases, making it even more important to wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device whenever you are on the water.
While this incident had a positive outcome, police officials say it’s an important reminder that emergencies on the water can happen unexpectedly and a life jacket can make the difference between life and death in an emergency.
