It’s always nice when people can put their differences aside and pull together for a great cause.
That’s what happened in a big way on Wednesday for the annual Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon in support of the Children’s Foundation.
10 local radio stations including this one (of course) banded together, put down our usual rivalries and pitched in along with local restaurants and other community leaders to help raise an amazing $50,000.
This award-winning broadcast only works as well as it does because we set aside our usual rivalries for a day and focus on what truly matters, which is providing opportunities for kids to go to camp, play sports and engage in many other artistic and recreational activities.
Now, real talk, this isn’t usually the case. Radio is a fiercely competitive industry with passionate people who care deeply about the communities they serve while relishing the chance for some healthy competition with our colleagues and competitors in other buildings.
Most of the time it’s cordial and respectful, but it’s always there.
In many other markets, this event wouldn’t happen. People put themselves and others in silos and rarely step outside them.
But that’s not what happens here. In Quinte, we can set aside the rivalries and pull together for a common cause that is well worth supporting because it’s all about the kids.
Again, that shouldn’t be rare, but it is. So, thanks to Ingrid at the Children’s Foundation for being the glue that helps us bond together for a remarkable and vitally important day. That community spirit and leadership is something we should all be thankful for.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
