Concerns about antisemitic flyers being spread in the area around the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, the site of a devastating shooting on Sept. 20.
Reports to InQuinte.ca said that flyers containing antisemitic messaging were circulated Wednesday in the area around the synagogue in the east end.
The Belleville Police Service confirmed in a message to the public on Thursday it is aware of these flyers and its members are actively investigating.
“We recognize that incidents such as this can cause concern within our community,” a BPS official stated.
“Hate has no place in Belleville, and the Belleville Police Service remains in contact with community leaders and are taking proactive steps to support the safety and well-being of residents.”
Increased patrols will continue throughout Belleville, including around places of worship and other community gathering spaces.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity is encouraged to report it to police. Anyone who witnesses or experiences a hate-motivated incident should call 911 in an emergency or contact the Belleville Police Service non-emergency line at 613-966-0882.
The BPS is also asking anyone with information or video evidence to contact aboulay@bellevilleps.ca.
Congregation President Norm Weddum says a member of their congregation has been contacted by police as part of the investigation and police have been asking for doorbell or dashcam footage from people living in the area.
When he spoke to InQuinte.ca, Weddum said he hasn’t seen the poster/flyer yet, but he was shocked especially because of the outpouring of community support they have received over the past two weeks.
One Belleville Police Officer was critically wounded defending the Sons of Jacob Synagogue from a heavily-armed attacker 11 days ago.
The suspected shooter died in the hospital the next day.
