The inaugural Roll for Impact Boccia Classic brought together a sold-out roster of 24 teams at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre on Sunday, raising $7,786 in support of children, youth, and families served by the Quinte Children’s Treatment Centre (QCTC).
Delivered through a community partnership between the Belleville General Hospital Foundation, QCTC, and the Quinte Leatherbacks Boccia Club, the event introduced participants of all ages and abilities to the inclusive sport of boccia — a precision game similar to curling or lawn bowling that can be adapted for a wide range of physical abilities.
From first-time players to more experienced participants, the day highlighted the accessibility of the sport and the strong sense of community it fosters. With beginner and intermediate divisions, teams of two competed throughout the day in a welcoming and supportive environment.
“This event really showcased what inclusion in action looks like,” says Amanda Grydziuszko of the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. “It was incredible to see families, children, and community members of all ages trying boccia for the first time, supporting one another, and having fun while raising funds for an important cause.”
Heather Menaldo, Director of the Quinte Children’s Treatment Centre, says events like this help strengthen both awareness and connection within the community. “QCTC supports children and youth with physical, developmental, and communication needs through therapy, specialized programs, and supports for families,” she says.
“Events like the Boccia Classic help bring people together while also highlighting the services available to families in our region.”
The Quinte Leatherbacks Boccia Club played a key role throughout the day, assisting with organization, officiating games, and helping participants learn the sport. “We were thrilled to support the first Roll for Impact Boccia Classic,” says Colleen DeMille on behalf of the Quinte Leatherbacks Boccia Club.
“Boccia is such an inclusive sport, and it was amazing to see so many new players discover it. The energy in the arena all day was fantastic.”
In addition to tournament play, the QCTC team was onsite offering family-friendly activities and opportunities for attendees to learn more about the programs and services available to local children and families.
Community support extended beyond the courts, with sponsors including Kinpsych, Motion, CBI Health, Big Words Little People, Stride Academy, Make Way for Me and Belleville Home Health Care along with additional community partners who contributed prizes and refreshments. Volunteers supported registration, scorekeeping, and event logistics throughout the day.
