The Northumberland Detachment of the OPP has charged an individual following an incident at Warkworth Institution earlier this year.

On January 30, it was reported that a visitor at the facility refused to leave and kicked a door causing injury to a Correctional Officer. The member of staff was later transported to a local hospital for non-serious injuries.

As a result of the investigation, the Northumberland OPP Crime Unit took one person into custody on March 16.

Maryan Mahamed, 32, from Scarborough, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in April.

The OPP and Correctional Service Canada (CSC) work in close partnership to maintain the safety and security of correctional institutions and surrounding communities.

This collaboration includes proactive measures to prevent the introduction of contraband, thorough investigations when incidents occur, and enforcement of applicable laws.

Together, CSC and the OPP are committed to protecting staff, inmates, and the public by addressing activities that threaten institutional safety, including the trafficking of illicit substances.
