You have the perfect chance this week to thank Belleville Police for all they do to protect those of us who live in the Friendly City.
This week is Crime Prevention Week in Ontario, with this year’s theme, “Protecting Ontario Together”.
When people think about Belleville Police and the hard-working officers with local OPP detachments, we usually think of responding to crimes after the fact.
An underappreciated element is how the public and police services work together to strengthen connections and the community itself and actually help prevent some crimes before they happen through vigilance, education and efficient reporting and communication.
You also have opportunities to connect with members of the Belleville Police Service during:
Coffee with a Cop – at Starbucks, 295 North Front St., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a casual conversation about community safety and crime prevention.
There will also be a Prayer Walk for Peace on Thursday afternoon, starting at 1pm at St Thomas Anglican Church in Belleville.
These events also highlight the fact that officers are more than a badge and a series of tasks. They are human beings that work, live and raise families right here and have a very personal stake in the success and safety of the entire community.
In light of recent events, a cup of coffee and a kind word (in my opinion) is the least we can give them in return.
I’m Paul Martin and that’s what I see looking Beyond the Headlines.
