The Belleville Senators kicked off their triple-header weekend against the Laval Rocket on Belle-vegas Night, falling 5-4 in overtime.
Early on, the Rocket applied pressure, but the Senators struck first on the power play. Scoring his second goal of the season, Kasper Halttunen beat Kaapo Kahkonen, with Christian Kyrou and Xavier Bourgault picking up assists to give Belleville a 1-0 lead.
The Senators added another tally just over a minute later. At even strength, Christian Kyrou and Tyler Boucher combined to set up Shane Bowers who walked in to score, extending Belleville’s lead to 2-0.
To start the second period, the BSens added to their cushion with a familiar face finding the scoresheet. Just over two minutes into the frame, Halttunen doubled his goal total for the night as Philippe Daoust and Bourgault collected assists, pushing it to a 3-0 contest.
Halttunen wasn’t finished there, completing his hat trick and recording his first three-goal performance as a Senator. Daoust and Bourgault picked up assists on the goal as well, extending Belleville’s lead to four. The Rocket responded before the end of the period, cutting into the deficit. Laval newcomer Sasha Pastujov netted his fourth goal of the season, with Luke Mittelstadt earning his sixth assist to make it 4-1.
In the third period, the Rocket mounted a comeback, starting with a power-play marker. Brett Berard scored his third goal of the season, beating Jonas Johansson with some assistance from Jared Davidson and Middelstadt, cutting Belleville’s lead to 4-2. Later in the period, Laval struck again.
Davidson and Filip Mesar teamed up to set up Hunter McKown for his first goal, bringing the Rocket within one at 4-3. With under three minutes remaining, Mesar scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4. Dillan Bentley and Reilly Walsh picked up assists, sending the contest to overtime.
In the extra frame, Laval completed the comeback as Mittelstadt buried the winner, sealing a 5-4 victory for the Rocket.
Johansson finished with 41 saves on 46 Laval chances.
Belleville will get another crack at the Rocket on Wednesday, November 18th, when the Senators make their annual trip to the Canadian Tire Centre for the first of two school-day games this season. The puck drops at 10:30 a.m. in the nation’s capital.
Before then, the Senators will move on to the middle game of their three-game weekend set as the Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) visit the Friendly City for the first time this season. Tomorrow’s Battle of Ontario gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
