RELEASE – The Cobourg Police Service Board remains committed to addressing the financial concerns identified within the Cobourg Police Service through responsible oversight, transparency, and appropriate independent review.
Prior to the current administration assuming responsibility, financial reporting had been requested from the previous administration. Those requested reports were not provided.
In response to ongoing financial concerns, the Board initiated a detailed budget review conducted by the Financial Manager to gain a clearer understanding of the Service’s financial position.
Within hours of the Board reviewing the final report, it was forwarded to the Inspectorate of Policing. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was also consulted. Based on the findings and all available information, the Board determined that a forensic audit would be undertaken as the next step in the process.
The report was also shared with the Town of Cobourg Treasurer, who was asked to complete a comprehensive peer review.
These actions are supported by documentation and reflect the Board’s commitment to ensuring that financial concerns receive appropriate scrutiny.
Statement from Board Chair Adam Bureau
“I want the residents of Cobourg to know that I am incredibly proud of the members of our Police Service Board and the work they have done throughout this challenging process. We have faced difficult decisions, asked tough questions, and taken steps to ensure that these financial concerns are properly examined. I am equally proud of the commitment our Board has demonstrated to the work that still lies ahead. We recognize that there are serious issues to address, and we are committed to seeing this process through and making the necessary improvements within our authority. Accountability is not about pointing fingers or assigning blame before all the facts are known. It is about taking responsibility, asking difficult questions, and having the courage to act. Our officers, civilian staff, and taxpayers deserve a police service that is properly supported, financially accountable, and governed responsibly. I have confidence in my fellow Board members and their continued dedication to addressing these challenges. That is our commitment to the residents of Cobourg.”
