The City of Belleville has posted a message of solidarity and support on the one-week anniversary of the shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in the city’s east end.
The message, posted on Facebook on Sunday morning, is included in its entirety below.
FACEBOOK POST FROM CITY OF BELLEVILLE –
One week ago, our City was shaken by a hate-motivated attack targeting Belleville’s Jewish community at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.
In the days since, we have seen the very best of Belleville. We have seen our community come together during a time of great difficulty, an outpouring of gratitude and recognition for Constables Jeff Smith and Mike McCurdy and all of the first responders who answered the call that night, and unwavering support for our Jewish community.
As we reflect on the events of last Sunday and the impact they have had on our city, we are clear that there is no place for antisemitism, hate or violence in Belleville. Everyone deserves to feel safe in our community and in their place of worship. We stand firmly with Belleville’s Jewish community and all those who have been impacted by this horrific act of hate.
Constables Jeff Smith and Mike McCurdy are true heroes who showed extraordinary courage that night. They put themselves in harm’s way, saving the lives of many and preventing an unimaginable tragedy. We are incredibly proud and grateful to have them serving our community. Our thoughts remain with Constable Smith and his family as he begins his road to recovery from the serious injuries he sustained in the line of duty.
In the face of hate and violence, Belleville responded with compassion, strength and unity. We looked out for one another, stood together and showed what it means to be a community.
